Securitas: A History Rich in Security

When Securitas AB entered the U.S. market by acquiring Pinkerton, the company became the largest security firm in the world. At the time, Securitas AB was already the leading protective services company in Europe, but few here in America were aware of the firm’s stature in the industry or the respect associated with its name. Since then, Securiats has established its place in the U.S. as The Leader in Protective Services.

Securitas acquired Pinkerton. Pinkerton has a rich history and this acquisition began Securitas' expansion into the United States. Today, Pinkerton is the industry's leading provider of Risk Management services.

Early & Mid-1900's

Securitas was founded in 1934 when Erik Philip-Sörensen traveled to Helsingborg, Sweden to set up a small night-watch business. He believed that staying safe is one of the most basic human needs.

In 1958, the "Basic Values for Guards" was developed, comprising 20 codes of behavior. These were then condensed into our three core values: Integrity, Vigilance and Helpfulness.

In 1972, all companies owned by Philip-Sörensen were gathered under the collective name "Securitas." The logotype of three red dots representing our three core values quickly became a well-known symbol - first in Sweden, then internationally.

Our affiliate Pinkerton was Founded in 1850. Allan Pinkerton, the “original private eye,” founded Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency in Chicago. By 1861, he achieved national recognition when he uncovered and foiled a plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. Pinkerton helped organize a federal secret service, of which he became chief.
