Improving efficiency at the airport without compromising security

Public Transportation | Indianapolis Airport Authority

Challenge: During the transition from in-house to contract security, Securitas managed the specific security needs of the Indianapolis Airport Authority, its workforce, and travelers.

Alongside the TSA’s duty of screening passengers and baggage, individual airports are responsible for checking IDs, vehicles, and materials at internal access points used by airport employees, vendors and contract workers. Providing a high level of service for the 7.2 million passengers and 135 daily flights daily at the Indianapolis International Airport requires an extensive team.

Solution: International Experience, Local Solutions

  • Utilized expertise from the Securitas’ Transport Aviation Department in London which oversees a number of airports.
  • Securitas’ existing contracts with many state government offices enabled the airport to be included in the official bid and streamlined the process
  • Securitas understood the importance of maintaining the workforce. After completing the proper background screening, 80% of the previous security team stayed on as Securitas USA officers, including the on-site manager.

  • Using Securitas saves the airport $500,000 annually.
  • Airport security has been maintained. Random tests to pass a device, a fake gun or other contraband through the access checkpoints, are conducted regularly as required by the TSA. The Securitas USA team has always passed with flying colors.
